What are the signs that a loved one may not be able to look after themselves anymore? We all want independence for those we love – for them to live on their own terms enjoying the final decades after a life well lived. But when does safety trump independence?
- Have they fallen recently or are they fearful of falling?
- Do they miss taking their medications at the recommended times or forget them entirely?
- Are you concerned about your loved one’s driving?
- Are they losing weight but eat well when others have prepared food for them?
- Does a chronic illness require daily monitoring, such as diabetes or high blood pressure?
- Has there been a change in their personal hygiene, grooming or outward appearance?
- Is there a clean and clutter-free home environment?
- Is your loved one depressed or lonely? Would she benefit from someone to talk to or visit with?
- Is there a history of UTIs (urinary tract infections) or problems with dehydration?
- Are they adamant about not needing assistance in their home even for small chores?
Every “Yes” answer to the above questions can be a red flag for a potential physical or psychological problem. Major safety risks involve falls, medication errors, poor diet and depression. Very often, our loved ones will deny most of these conditions in order to stay in their homes as long as possible. But ironically, if these conditions are addressed early and they get assistance, they are more likely to be able to live comfortably at home with some supervision.
